4 Steps to Better Dental Hygiene in 2024

One of the biggest resolutions that people make at the start of each year is to have a better smile. We hear it a lot here at Dental Solutions and we love to help people with this goal! That is why we aim to help and educate as many people as possible when it comes to dental hygiene, because this is the first and most important step to a better smile.

With that in mind, here are some important tips to improve your dental hygiene throughout 2024. Start improving your hygiene today for a better smile tomorrow.

1 – Monitor Your Diet

What you eat and drink can have a major impact on your overall oral health. Acidic foods and drinks may taste good, but they can have a long-lasting negative impact on your oral health. That is why, importantly, you should be careful about what you eat and drink. This means trying to remove as much acidic foodstuff that can seriously damage the enamel of your teeth.

Avoiding fizzy drinks and ready meals (which are full of sugars and other harmful preservatives) are key to ensuring your diet is oral-friendly. But if the occasional fizzy drink is a must, we recommend that you use a straw to minimise enamel damage.

Do incorporate more fruit and crunchy vegetables. The fresher and the less processed your diet is, the better!

2 – Brush & Floss Regularly

Keeping a routine when it comes to activities such as brushing and flossing is vital to your long-term oral health. Brushing your teeth every day both in the morning and the night is something which you should do without question. Remember to also brush your tongue during your daily routine. Lots of bacteria gather on your tongue every day, which can impact your oral health.

3 – Drink Water Regularly

Water is the number one drink that is optimal for all aspects of your health. The rule of thumb is to drink at least five cups of water each day, especially after a meal as it can help to wash away some of the negative effects of acidic foods. Brushing twice a day means a build-up of debris, acid and sticky foods in your mouth, so water can be the ideal way to wash away some of this debris in the interim.

4 – Regular Dental Checkups

At the end of the day, one of the key things that you need to do to help your dental hygiene is to see your dentist at least twice a year. During these checkups, your dentist can check for cavities, your overall gum health to more intense issues such as an oral cancer check. We also recommend a regular visit to our team of dental hygienists to ensure that any staining or calculus is removed and that your brushing technique is effective.

If any issues are detected, then you can be fully assessed and a treatment plan can be put together. This may be fairly simple, such as a scale and polish, or maybe the start of a more intensive cosmetic treatment plan. From here, you will also be advised on a better home care plan that will help your oral hygiene year-round.
