Basic Tips to Maintain Dental Hygiene

Oral hygiene is essential to maintaining a beautiful and healthy smile. Not only can poor dental hygiene affect your appearance, it can also lead to several health hazards, such as gum disease, cavities, and more serious conditions. Give your teeth a reason to smile bright by following these easy dental hygiene tips.

Brush your teeth at least two times a day
Brushing your teeth twice a day removes bacteria and acid build-up from your mouth that is caused by food. Proper brushing also allows you to remove plaque and debris from your teeth, promoting a bright and healthy smile. In order to properly brush your teeth, position the bristles of your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and move the toothbrush back and forth, and up and down, along your teeth in a steady motion. Avoid brushing too vigorously, as this could cause damage to your gums. Make sure to brush hard to reach teeth, as well as your tongue and the roof of your mouth in order to eliminate odour.

Floss
Many people skip this step, even though it is essential to oral hygiene. When you eat, food and other debris often get lodged in the cracks between your teeth. Failing to floss could cause cavities to form in the corners of your teeth where your toothbrush bristles are unable to reach. Flossing at least once a day can prevent unwanted cavities and bacteria build-up. When you floss, make sure to floss all the way to your gums, but be gentle in order to avoid damaging them.

Avoid tobacco
One of the best things you can do for your oral health is to avoid tobacco. Tobacco can lead to a variety of oral ailments, such as gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth decay. Regular tobacco usage will also stain your teeth, causing them to yellow quickly.

Be conscious of your diet
Sugary drinks and food can lead to cavity formation and tooth decay as they allow for plaque build-up. Tea and coffee can also leave a stain on your teeth. On the other hand, milk and other calcium-rich foods and beverages help your teeth build enamel. The Vitamin D and Calcium found in milk promote bone strength, giving you a strong and bright smile. Ideal oral hygiene requires a balanced diet, complete with vitamins and minerals.

Schedule regular dentist visits
You should schedule a full hygiene treatment in Warrington with your dentist at least twice a year in order to maintain strong and healthy teeth. At your visit your dentist will perform a comprehensive exam, noting any major changes in your oral health. If you experience any aches and pains to your teeth or gums, you should also schedule an appointment as soon as possible to receive a diagnosis and treatment plan which may include a scale and polish. Going to the dentist should not be a dreaded experience; on the contrary, you should find a practice that makes you feel comfortable and at ease knowing that your teeth are being cared for properly.
