In this blog, we take a look at some of the benefits of zygomatic implants and why they just might be the best option for you.
Zygomatic implants differ from other types of implants such as All-on-4, as they are anchored in the zygomatic or cheekbone hence the name. Typically, the zygomatic implant is ideal for patients who may have inadequate or poor quality bone in their upper jaw, and so regular dental implants would be impossible. When dentures have been worn for a long time, it can lead to the loss of large amounts of supporting bone which creates a ‘collapse’ or loss of face height. Zygomatic implants correct this loss of facial structure which also has a rejuvenating effect to the appearance of the face.
Dr Brookshaw and patient Janice discuss her zygoma implants in this video, explaining why it was the best solution for her after so many years of struggling to find a dentist who could provide her with a fixed solution; https://youtu.be/hv3fE6ortKE .
Although Zygomatic implants are considerably longer than conventional implants, the treatment is very similar from the patient’s perspective. The placement of Zygomatic implants is minimally invasive, using our image guided surgery. Also, to make the experience as comfortable as possible, this treatment always takes place under sedation.
Once the surgical placement of the zygomatic implant is completed the bridge is fitted the same day. This removes the need for a waiting period for grafts to heal; meaning patients can be free of their dentures practically overnight. The whole procedure is completed in a single session, meaning you don’t have to wait six months for a confident new smile. The zygomatic treatment plan is also a faster alternative when compared against more complicated bone grafting procedures.
One of the biggest benefits when it comes to zygomatic implants is the fact that the recovery time is relatively speedy. As mentioned above, the dentures can be fitted the same day as your surgery. But, the surgery itself does not require a bone graft and thus the recovery time can also be much faster –between 4 to 6 months.
“In terms of the implant treatment on the day itself I had no discomfort, whilst feeling aware of what was going on around me most of the time. I was expecting pain in the following days but instead it was more a feeling of discomfort with a bit of swelling and minor bruising on my jawline which was controlled quite easily with ibuprofen.
When I went back to work after a week, my colleagues were so complimentary – they just couldn’t believe how natural they looked. My confidence has really grown since the treatment – I no longer cover my mouth which I used to do before the treatment.”
“I can’t say enough to praise and thank the team for what they have done for me. My teeth feel and look natural – they feel normal and completely secure in my mouth like my own used to be. I can eat an apple once again without wondering if my plate would snap.
I think that my confidence had drained away before this treatment – I used to avoid social situations where eating was involved. My wife has noticed that I smile a lot more now than I used to before treatment and that my confidence is back. I’m so much happier than I was!”
