What To Expect During A Dental Check Up Procedure

Attending regular dental check up procedures is essential to keeping your mouth healthy. Even if your teeth feel fine, there are some things that only your dentist will be able to spot. If you avoid your dental check ups, this could lead to tooth decay or tooth loss further down the line.

During a dental check up procedure, your dentist or dental hygienist will:

  • Assess your overall oral health and oral hygiene
  • Look for signs of tooth decay, root decay, gum disease and bone disease
  • Tell you if you need tooth restoration or replacement
  • Check your jaw and bite for signs of problems
  • Assess the need for a fluoride treatment
  • Give you advice on how to take care of your teeth or dentures
  • Take X-rays to diagnose problems
  • Check your dentures for potential adjustments
  • Carry out an oral cancer screening by checking the soft tissues inside and outside the mouth

Dental check up procedure for younger patients

For our youngest patients, the dental check up procedure will often include a quick tutorial on brushing and flossing so that the child is well equipped to take care of their teeth. The dentist will also look for crowding problems and advise on the need for orthodontic treatments.

Dental check up procedure for adults

As an adult, it’s still very important that you attend your regular dental check up procedure, even if you don’t think there is anything wrong and brush your teeth regularly. There are some things, like cavities, that only your dentist will be able to spot and treat. So, no matter how well you brush, you should still visit your dentist. Gum disease can often go unnoticed and can lead to tooth loss if untreated.

Dental check up procedure for elderly patients

Even as you get older, it’s important that you still attend regular dentist appointments. If you have missing teeth, the dentist can advise on tooth replacement options such as dental implants or implant retained dentures. If you already have dentures, your dentist or hygienist will check if the dentures need to be adjusted to make them more comfortable.
