When Should I See A Dental Hygienist?

If you want to keep your teeth hygienically clean and free from plaque and tartar buildup, you need to see a dental hygienist about twice a year. Not only is this a great habit to get into for your dental health, but it’s also a great way to get into the habit of asking questions about your teeth. We’ve found that patients open up to their dental hygienist and are more likely to ask all the burning questions that they might not ask their dentist.

How does a dental hygienist fit into my oral health care?

Forgive the analogy, but you should care for your teeth like you would a car. You might wash your car regularly at home, and take it in for its annual MOT, but it’s still nice to take it in for a service every now and then. If you missed that, the MOT is your dentist, and the service is the dental hygienist. If you visit a dentist twice a year, then visiting the dental hygienist twice a year can help you to keep on top of your oral health.

What does a dental hygienist do?

Your dental hygienist will assess your oral health, provide a deep clean and offer you suggestions on how to keep your teeth healthy and strong. In our practice, we use High Performance AirFlow Clean, which delivers incredible results without actually touching your teeth – so it’s perfect for nervous patients! The process works using air, sodium bicarbonate and a jet of water. And the best part, it tastes like lemon, so you won’t be left with a bad taste in your mouth.

Who should consider visiting the dental hygienist?

We would recommend this to everyone and their nan! Trips to the dentist can be daunting, but you’ll leave a dental hygienist visit with the huge smile on your face. If you have particular dental health concerns or have recently completed a treatment, you might also benefit from a scale and polish.

  • Orthodontic patients can benefit from a trip to the dental hygienist before, during and after their treatment. Good oral hygiene is essential to the success of braces – and it’s a wonderful feeling when you can get a deep clean after your braces have been removed!
  • Implant patients can also benefit from a trip to the dental hygienist before and after their treatment, as our wonderful team of dental hygienists will be able to teach you all the tricks for keeping your implants in great shape.
  • If you’re looking for a quick boost before a special occasion, or if you are considering getting a tooth whitening treatment, you are the perfect candidate for a trip to the dental hygienist. Even if you’re not too keen on the prospect of tooth whitening, you can get great results and reveal brighter and whiter teeth after a scale and polish.
  • Nervous patients often appreciate a trip to the hygienist’s chair to help them build up to a trip to the dentist’s chair. If you’ve been putting off going to the dentist for a while, a quick scale and polish could be just what you need to build your confidence.
