Overcoming Dental Anxiety: Our Tips And Tricks

Dental anxiety is a problem that many people face. Often leading them to avoid making or attending dental appointments for months or even years at a time. It may be a bad experience as a child, the fear of needles, or embarrassment that keeps you away from your dentist. But, the fact is that it can be a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Especially if you want to have a healthy mouth.

Of course, in an ideal world, we would prefer it if everyone was as comfortable coming to the dentist as they were, say, going to the cinema. But, that isn’t always the case and so we have put together some of our best tips and tricks to help you overcome your dental anxiety.

Embarrassment

The most common thing preventing us from going to the dentist is the sheer embarrassment in many cases. However, damaged or otherwise less than ideal teeth is something that our dentists see daily and are completely used to. Treating and making your teeth as healthy as possible for you is something that they have trained to do for many years.

And with so many cosmetic dentistry treatments on offer, your embarrassment can be far more short-lived if you visit the dentist regularly. So if you feel ashamed about your smile, take the time to call us. Let us know about any problems and how you are feeling. Our team is trained to listen and talk to many anxious patients every single day. You are not alone- we take great job satisfaction in converting anxious patients into happy patients- it is more than possible! You may find that it is a relief to have someone who understands and is able to help deal with your source of embarrassment at last.

Overcoming Dental Fear

Of course, on the other hand, fear is also a large factor in why many people choose to avoid the dentist. If fear is at the root of your problem, then some good tips to overcoming it include:

  • Identify the fear. Once you understand the root of the problem, you can work with a dentist in order to overcome it.
  • Take someone to your appointments. Sometimes, having that moral support can really make you feel better during the examination and to take that first step through the door.
  • If you are scared of the dentist’s surgery or chair we can always meet you in our office which has no equipment and have an initial meeting with you there. We can take the consultation at your pace – you are in complete control.
  • Breathe. Mindfulness and meditation techniques are great during any dental examination. And you can also listen to music or watch television at our dental practice, as we have TV’s fitted into the ceiling for your benefit!
  • Ask for professional advice. When anxiety or nerves are this severe, it’s always better to get professional advice to ensure you are doing the right thing.

Choose the Right Dentist

The key to a good dental experience is always reliant on the person conducting the examination. A kind and understanding dentist really can make a world of difference. And, at Dental Solutions, we are lucky to have Gavin Laidlaw on hand for just that purpose. A partner in the practice, he has been treating patients with anxiety and dental phobia for many years now. Believe it or not, many of his previously nervous patients actually look forward to their appointments now!

If you would like to know more then please e-mail us on [email protected] or call us on 01925756565 and leave a message. We can help to arrange your first visit to our practice as soon as we reopen.

Or you can even book an initial free consultation, where you can meet the team and have a look around the practice – no examination necessary! It can be a great way to get used to the surroundings in a non-threatening way and something we are only more than happy to do for our nervous patients. We look forward to welcoming you to the practice as soon as we re open after the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.
