Richard Brookshaw is one of a handful of surgeons in the UK who regularly perform the highly complex zygoma implant procedure. Richard also lectures all over the world to other dentists, including at the biggest dentistry show in the world such as Euro Perio at the ExCel London and Nobel Biocare Team Congress in London.
In addition to teaching, Richard is involved in a number of voluntary projects for Dentaid, a large International dental charity both in the UK and Overseas. Dentaid’s main objective is to bring relief to people who are suffering through lack of dental care.
For two weeks in July, Richard was travelling to Uganda as part of the Dentaid project team to treat around a thousand of adults and children who have no other access to dental care. He has visited schools and also treated inmates at the Children’s prison in Kampala. His intention was also to visit more rural areas as part of several community outreach projects and at the same time mentor and train local dental therapists in order to help them provide better dental care to their communities. Lots of people in these areas of Uganda chew on sugar cane and the price of sugary fizzy drinks is about the same as bottled water and unfortunately there aren’t enough dentists to treat all these people.
Apart from Dentaid, Richard is involved in a groundbreaking new project in the UK – a collaboration with Dentaid and the Real Junk Food Project in Yorkshire entitled the Real Junk Tooth project. Richard will be supervising Junior Surgeons on how to treat the homeless, Asylum seekers and others who are suffering dental pain but have no access to emergency NHS dentistry.
