What Type of Braces Can I Get as an Adult?

Dental braces are becoming more and more popular amongst the adult population. While dental braces used to be all metal, there are many different types of braces available today.

Traditional metal braces are made of the stainless steel brackets and wires that inspired the nickname ‘metal mouth’ for many youngsters. Fortunately, today’s metal braces are noticeably smaller. If you are thinking about having adult braces you have so many options to choose from.

Traditional Braces

If you opt for traditional fixed braces, they will consist of metal brackets which will be bonded to the teeth. Wires are then attached to the brackets to move the teeth into position and to correct your orthodontic problems. Small rubber bands, attach the wires to the brackets.

The benefits of traditional braces are:

– They don’t get discoloured

– They are durable

– They correct a wide range of orthodontic problems

– They’re also suitable for all ages children, teenagers and adults

How long to I have to have traditional braces for?

This will depend on the severity of your orthodontic problem. They can last from 1 to 3 years, and retainers should be worn after the braces come off to ensure the teeth remain in their new position.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a system which uses almost invisible braces to straighten teeth. The system uses a series of clear aligners that are custom made to fit you and look a bit like a thin, clear gum shield. These are an obvious first choice for many people because so many people won’t even notice that you are wearing them.

The benefits of Invisalign are:

– They’re invisible (almost)

– Quick treatment time

– They’re convenient – you can remove them to eat, for example

– More suitable for adults

How long do I have to have Invisalign braces for?

The treatment time varies but it typically lasts around 9 months. New advances in Invisalign technology mean that you can change your aligners every week.

Six-Month Smiles

The Six Month Smiles treatment is a quicker alternative to traditional braces. The braces are clear, and so less visible than traditional ones. This treatment focuses on moving the teeth that show when you smile, improving the cosmetic appearance.

The benefits of Six Month Smiles are:

– Discreet, clear braces that are barely noticeable.

– You can get a great smile in much less time

– It may be more economical than Invisalign or traditional braces

– It is also more suitable for adults

How long does the treatment last?

As you may have guessed by the name, the average treatment lasts for six months, and then retainers should be worn.

Lingual Braces

Teeth can now be straightened by placing braces that hide on the inside surface of your teeth – meaning that they are 100 invisible. These are a great option for people who are worried about people seeing their braces. Lingual brace practitioners need special training and only a few dental practices in the UK offer this treatment. Depending on the individual case, treatment can be as short as 6 months!

The benefits of Lingual Braces are:

– Totally discreet! They are 100 invisible.

– Treatment can take as little 6 months
