Dental bridges and implants are two common solutions used to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are strong, long lasting artificial teeth inserted into the jawbone during oral surgery, while bridges are dental protheses that join artificial tooth permanently to adjacent teeth. The Difference Between Bridge & Implants
- Longevity: Bridges last an average of 10 years whilst dental implants can last a lifetime if they are properly cared for.
- Treatment time: A permanent bridge replaces the temporary bridge only two weeks after the initial procedure. Implants, on the other hand, are made out of titanium metal that “fuses” with the jawbone.This process takes time, usually, a few months are required for complete healing.
- Bone preservation: Bone loss may occur both with missing teeth and with bridges. Implants are the only type of restorative treatment that can prevent jawbone deterioration.
- Hygiene: Proper oral hygiene is important both with bridges and implants. Special care will need to be taken with removable dentures and bridges to prevent plaque build up. Implants also require special care and dental check-ups in the months after they are put in.
- Stability: Certain types of dental bridges are more stable than others. However, because they are not a permanent solution, they do not offer complete stability. Dental implants are extremely stable and will never slip out of place.
