Dental Implants vs Bridges

Bridges vs Implants

Dental bridges and dental implants are two common solutions used to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are strong and long-lasting artificial teeth with artificial roots that are inserted into the jawbone during oral surgery, while bridges are dental prostheses that connect artificial teeth permanently to adjacent natural teeth.

Look at the comparison below to better understand the differences between the treatment options of dental implants vs bridges.

The Difference Between Bridges vs Implants

While both of these treatments are popular solutions to the problem of missing teeth, which can affect the patient’s ability to eat and speak comfortably and lower their self-esteem, they are both very different procedures that provide different results.

Here are the significant factors that differ when it comes to dental implants vs bridges.

1) Bone preservation

Other than missing teeth, good oral health is a requirement to have a bridge or implants fitted. This includes having enough jawbone density and quantity.

When teeth fall out, the jawbone underneath no longer receives stimulation from the pressure of biting and chewing, so the bone weakens and deteriorates.

This deterioration may continue with a bridge, as the artificial teeth sit on top of the gum and don’t stimulate the bone underneath the gum.

Dental implants are the only type of restorative treatment that can prevent jawbone deterioration because they have artificial titanium roots that are surgically inserted into the jaw through the gum so they can directly stimulate the jawbone.

2) Treatment time

Fitting a dental bridge is a non-invasive procedure that involves filing the teeth on either side of the gap and taking a mould so a custom bridge can be manufactured.

A temporary bridge is fitted in the meantime; then, the permanent bridge will replace the temporary version only two weeks after the initial procedure.

Implants, on the other hand, require the implanting of artificial roots made out of biocompatible titanium metal that ‘fuses’ with the jawbone. This process takes time – usually, a few months are required for complete healing.

Temporary crowns may be placed in the meantime, but the final artificial teeth on top of the root will not be fitted until the jawbone is fully healed around the implant.

The dental implant procedure can also take longer if another surgery is required first, such as a bone graft to achieve enough bone in the area for dental implants.

In both cases, you’ll receive replacement teeth that look real and function almost exactly like your missing teeth would have.

3) Stability

Certain types of dental bridges are more stable than others, and all bridges are more stable than traditional removable dentures. However, because they are not a permanent solution, they do not offer complete stability.

Dental implants are highly stable and will never slip out of place because they are anchored into the jaw with artificial roots the way a naturally rooted tooth would be.

The crowns of both bridges and implants look like natural teeth, and both function like real teeth, allowing you to bite and chew like you have all your natural teeth.

While they are both comfortable and feel like your actual teeth once you get used to them, implants are the most comfortable and provide the best appearance.

Implants prevent your jawbone from deteriorating and affecting your face shape, while bridges can put strain on the teeth abutments are attached to.

4) Longevity

Bridges and implants are both long-term solutions for missing tooth restoration, as they aren’t removable, but how long they last depends on how well they’re cared for.

Bridges last an average of 5–10 years, whilst dental implants can last a lifetime if properly cared for – though the crowns may need to be replaced due to wear and tear.

Biting or chewing on a bridge can put extra pressure on the abutment teeth, which can cause faster deterioration, requiring a replacement much sooner.

Dental implant crowns may only need replacements every 15 years, while the implant root should last for decades once it is successfully integrated with your jaw.

This means that while implants have a higher upfront cost, they provide better value over time and offer much greater longevity than bridges.

5) Hygiene

Proper oral hygiene is important for all dental appliances, especially fixed ones like bridges and implants. Special care must be taken with bridges to prevent plaque build-up under the bridge, as food may get into the space between the fake tooth and the gum.

Dental implants also require special care and dental check-ups in the months after they are put in to make sure they have healed properly and remain in good condition.

However, once implanted artificial teeth are 100% healed, you can treat them exactly as you would treat normal teeth – which means brushing them at least twice a day.

Your dentist may also recommend flossing in both cases, as this can help to ensure that any food debris is removed from around the gum line where it could start building up.

If you don’t take care of artificial teeth and the surrounding natural teeth correctly, there is a risk of dental implants being rejected or the abutments coming loose due to damage to the teeth that they’re attached to.

Implants vs Bridges: Which is the best option?

Now you have more information about bridges and implants, you should be able to consider which treatment might be best for you if you want to replace missing teeth.

Both can be completed within 2–3 appointments, but implants require a surgical procedure and a wait of several months, while bridges are non-invasive and can be fitted much faster at a lower cost.

It depends on whether you prioritise upfront affordability and speed over longevity and a more permanent solution to potential jawbone loss – and, of course, whether a dentist has approved you as a suitable candidate for the treatment you’re considering.

I had a wisdom tooth extracted by Gavin after having toothache due to my tooth breaking. I was nervous as I had not had a tooth removed by injection before. Gavin was reassuring, explained the procedure fully and it was over quickly with no pain. All staff at the practice are caring, friendly and professional and I have been going for many years. I highly recommend Dental Solutions.

Can’t speak highly enough of this practice and in particular Lauren. 2 years ago I walked in and was so nervous I cried just as the sight of the chair. Her and the staff have been so patient and understanding and have worked with me to overcome my phobia. This week I had a filling and was absolutely fine, my family couldn’t believe it. Reception staff are lovely and really accommodating too. So glad I found them, I don’t dread the dentist anymore.

A really Five Star Dental Practice! Upon arrival I was greeted by their most friendly welcoming receptionists. it seems nothing is 'too much trouble' to them. Gavin is similarly very friendly and the surgery is kitted out with the most high-tech modern equipment. On my first visit Gavin examined my teeth and explained my options to me giving me his recommendation for treatment and reasons why. Their Co-ordinator prepared a detailed quote for my treatment and went through it in detail with me, ensuring I understood everything; she had plenty of time for me as a patient. From the outset I had complete confidence in entrusting them with my dental care and the final results are truly amazing. Gavin and Richard could not have been more professional and my treatment was made as painless as possible. Dental Solutions provide a truly outstanding service and I thank them for my new 'long lost' smile and renewed confidence, especially when dining out and talking with people. I can't recommend them too highly.

A first class experience from start to finish. Despite being fearful of visiting the dentist, Gavin put me at ease with his gentle unhurried manner. I was surprised at how relaxed I actually felt undergoing treatment for a crown and the removal/replacement of front teeth veneers. Having felt self conscious about my front teeth for a long time, I decided to have my old veneers replaced. The results were amazing and far exceeded my expectations. What Gavin achieved was nothing short of a work of art, boosting my confidence tenfold. The practice itself is very welcoming, the customer service excellent and the staff are all very friendly and kind. I cannot recommend this dental practise highly enough.

I recently needed some urgent treatment and after trying a couple of dentists in the area, dental solutions were the only dentist that agreed to see me, genuinely nobody else showed any interest in helping me. The receptionist I spoke to initially was super compassionate and understanding and did all she could to get me in asap. I saw Lauren for all of my appointments, and I’ve now had: a composite filling, root canal and emax crown and just yesterday had a wisdom tooth extracted. I don't know what Lauren does but I have had zero pain or discomfort with any treatments during and after. I'm extremely happy with the results of her work. She definitely knows her stuff and filled me with the utmost confidence whilst in the chair! I literally cant find any fault with any of the experiences I have had so far. They go the extra mile and do it with a smile. What more can you ask for?! Definitely my dentist for the foreseeable future! Thank you Lauren and everyone!
