What’s the Difference Between Anti-wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers?

There seems to be a lot of speculation about anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, namely surrounding which one is best. Getting subtle cosmetic treatments is a growing trend, with many people opting for small tweaks for younger looking skin rather than dramatic cosmetic surgery. At Dental Solutions, we offer our patients both Botox and dermal fillers. Find out more about both options below:

What’s the Difference Between Anti-Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers?

In brief; Botox is used to relax muscles, and dermal fillers are used to restore volume.

Botox, also known as Botulinum toxin, is a natural, purified protein used to temporarily relax facial muscles. This reduces the appearance of fine lines and winkles. Botox has become one of the most sought-out treatments for those who want to prevent the signs and effects of aging from occurring in their face or to correct any present signs. It’s largely used for cosmetic reasons, however, it can also be used to treat a medical condition called hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Dermal fillers on the other hand, aim to add volume to more pronounced wrinkles and folds, giving them a more youthful look. This is achieved through injecting the skin with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring product in our skin that’s lost with age.

The important things to consider when choosing between Botox and facial fillers is what kind of wrinkles you want to get rid of and how. Botox is the better choice for dynamic wrinkles as it will reduce their motion and visibility. These wrinkles occur when the face is in motion or making expression. They are usually positioned in the forehead and around the eyebrows. Facial fillers are ideal for static wrinkles, which are visible even when your face is relaxed and making no expression. These areas are depleted and sunken in and will benefit from the fullness that facial fillers give them.

What Are the Results of Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

Both botox and dermal fillers aim to make your skin appear youthful and smoother. The result is a softer appearance with the face feeling firmer without the need for major cosmetic face lift surgery.

One of the main reasons patients choose anti-wrinkle injections is because it’s a very effective temporary solution. They typically last between three and six months, allowing patients to decide each time whether they wish to have injections once more.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers aim to restore the lost collagen and elastin in the skin, often a side-effect of the ageing process. As the skin becomes dryer and looser, it’s less supported, meaning that you’re more susceptible to developing wrinkles and lines. When patients ask what’s the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, it’s primarily that dermal fillers use a naturally occurring product already in the body. This hyaluronic acid is injected through a tiny needle into the problem areas. Dental Solutions use Juvéderm and Revolax to achieve a smoother, firmer appearance.

What’s more, dermal fillers can also be used to add extra volume to the lips, commonly known as lip fillers. They’re far more safe than previous procedures and can last for as long as 18 months. They’ll then start to break down to be absorbed back into the body.
